Venue
The onshore venue is located at Tulista Park on 5th street in Sidney, BC and depicted in the adjacent photo (Click for larger image). This park is directly south of the Washington State - Sidney Anacortes Ferry facility. The park is a public park with a large grass area and with a concrete boat ramp. There should be ample parking and public washrooms are available. The park is a 6 minute walk to downtown Sidney and amenities.
Junior & Novice Short Course Race
The short course will leave the beach at Tulista, around the marker on the west shore of Sidney Island, to the north marker off James Island and back to the start at TulistaPark.
This out and back course is approximately 8.85 km. (Click short course map below for larger picture).
Also ORPC reserves the right to alter a course or cancel this race due to unsafe paddling/weather conditions at any point before and during the race event. We do have alternative courses but the decision will be made on race day.
OC 6 Race
The course is an on-water start off Tulista Park. It is tentatively set to leave the beach off Tulista Park, then head south along the shoreline of James Island, around the Shoals just NW of Darcy Island and back along the other side of James into Tulista. The direction of travel will be dictated by the current and wind conditions presented on the day of the race.
Course length is approximately 22 km. Please see course map (click for larger picture)..
Small Boat Race
The small boat race course on Sunday will be approximately 13 km in length and leaves Tulista Park past the tip of Sidney Island, around Forrest Island and back to Tulista
Park. Please see course map (Click for larger picture)
The strong tidal currents in the area affect the local paddling and should make all the races interesting. Depending on the wind strength/direction and the currents, there can be some wave formation to bring interest to the races.
Tulista is a beautiful park BUT it is also heavily used by fishers and the public. It is a very busy public launch. It is important that a few rules are followed to allow for things to go smoothly.
