Tulista Park, What You Need to Know

Tulista is a beautiful park BUT it is also heavily used by fishers and the public. It is a very busy public launch. It is important that a few rules are followed to allow for things to go smoothly.

Attached is a map of the area. CLICK for Larger.

Parking: Personal

There may not be a lot of parking in the park itself but there is ample free parking along Ocean Avenue and along the water side of Lochside Drive.

Parking:Trailers

We will have some designated parking for trailer loading and unloading. You will have to park lengthwise to NOT stick out and impede traffic. Four trailers can get in this spot, but it would be best to unload 2 trailers at a time. Ideally, unloading will be done communally by EVERYONE. This allows for trailers, once offloaded to be moved to the Sidney works yard at the west end of Ocean Avenue. This will allow other trailers the access for loading/unloading.

The pay parking area will hold a trailer unhitched but experience with this is that it will already be full with fishing trailers. If you do manage to grab a spot, you need to purchase a ticket.

As you can see, the round-about can not be impeded with canoes or trailers sticking out.

The trailer parking in Tulista is overnight with a pay fee. However, ORPC nor the Town of Sidney is responsible for the canoes if you choose to leave them there overnight. It is  a residential area, but there is no security and you do so at your own risk.

Rigging Canoes

We will need to give priority to trailers/canoes that are in the novice/short course. This includes the False Creek and Lotus trailers. Many hands make quick work…so please once onsite, everyone needs to be “Hands On.”

The rigging areas are outlined in the maps. You will also be directed to ensure that traffic is not impeded. We will have people assisting with parking and also, with the onsite launch attendants who are volunteers with the Sidney Anglers Association. Please be respectful if these people ask you to move something.

IF YOUR CLUB HAS A DOLLY BRING IT.

The Launch

This is a multi-lane launch but you will be directed which area to use. Please wait for direction before you launch. This needs to be coordinated as well with public users and a club volunteer and a Sidney Anglers volunteer will work with you.

The Staging Beach

The beaches around Tulista are “rough” and rocky. If you go south, you will find the beach quite strewn with boulders. The staging beach to the left of the launch has more “pea gravel” but it is still “rough”.

WE RECOMMEND BRINGING 2-3 TIRES FOR EACH CANOE TO BE BROUGHT UP ON THE BEACH OR USE PFDS TO PROTECT THE HULLS.

Between races, canoes will return to the staging area and ideally the switch offs between heats will happen quickly.

The beach itself has no wheelchair accessibility. Those that require it will have to enter their canoes from the launch itself.

Hazards

You will be directed, if busy, out of the staging area south to the start. You are NEVER to go inside the Anacortes Ferry terminal dock even if the ferry is not there. Failure to comply will result in a DQ.

General Park Rules

1)      There will be ample garbage receptacles, please use them.

2)      The park is open to the public, please be respectful of other users.

3)      The distribution or use of alcohol in the park is not allowed.

4)      If you wish to put up a canopy or tent, please no spikes or pegs due to the presence of a sprinkler system.
